Denver to Salt Lake City to Las Vegas 4th December

From the Brown Palace Hotel to Amtrak to Salt Lake City Utah
Woke up early, of course. Showered etc and checked out. The attractive girl who served me yesterday served me today. She seemed genuinely happy that I liked my room. Originally it was $225.00 for the room but I got back about $47.00 which was the deposit.

Got to the station after much walking. Dropped off a couple of postcards and my bag. McEvils for breakfast then waited for the train which arrived around 9:15am.

Much to my horror the compartment they'd assigned me to was the smoking compartment. I immediately complained and the very helpful conductor said he can't really do anything until we set off.

Within about 10 minutes, after the 15 or so waiting at the station, he came and repositioned me - right next to the bin. This is actually great. I don't have to walk far and the bin doesn't stink.

I'd totally forgotten that we would be going over the mountains and didn't pack another videotape. It ran out! The helpful conductor is currently searching for a way to get me to my bag. No luck yet.

The scenery is spectacular. Glistening white peaks punctuated with families of pines and sparkling sheets of snow. Beautiful.

Pulling into Grampy (Greater) Colorado.

Note to myself. Don't ever dine in the dining car again. The chicken sandwhich was a chicken burger. I could've got the same for half the price in the snack bar. Admittedly for the extra $3 or so you get soup and some greens but as soup sells for $1.50 and there wasn't much in the greens it definitely wasn't worth $6.25. I didn't leave a tip because I felt ripped off. Also, I was seated on the right when the views were on the left and I should've changed but when I asked it was too late.

No luck regarding my bag so it looks like I'll miss out on getting the rockies on video. We'll be arriving at another station soon. Hope that will speed things along.

Why didn't I remember? Too tired.

The views have ceased being spectacular. Now they're just endless.

We stopped at Salt Lake City Utah at about midnight so I went and wandered the streets in the hope I could buy a postcard. Got propositioned by two guys on the way back asking 'How much?'. No thanks, I'm fine!

Bought a newspaper and went back on board.

(I've got to say that the train from Denver to Las Vegas was the worst train ride I've been on but the best for scenery. I was put in the smoking car and had to wait 15 minutes before I could be moved. I've written that already. Anyway, the carriage didn't have a viewing car of sorts. The viewing / lounge car was also the snack car. Not much different but less space due to tables instead of just chairs. So, a lot more crowded than other trips.)

Got my bag. Got my video. Didn't get much on tape as batteries ran out and there really wasn't any place to record anything when you have an aisle seat! And now I lay me down to sleep.
